+ + + Prestigious award presented to innovative new eggplant
A special eye-catcher for terraces, balconies, and gardens has taken the lead: The "Pick-&-Joy Eggplant" (Solanum melongena) from Vreugdenhil Young Plants was honored today at IPM ESSEN with the prestigious Show Your Colours Award 2026.

The award, presented jointly by Messe Essen and BIZZ Holland in Hall 8, highlights plants with a certain "added value." This year, the innovative concept by Vreugdenhil Young Plants convinced both the international expert jury and the trade fair audience, who cast their votes via token voting over the past few days.
Stylish, Decorative, and Ready to Enjoy
The award-winning Pick-&-Joy® Eggplant is characterized by its exceptionally high ornamental value. With its light purple flowers, grey-green, velvety-soft foliage, and deep violet, glossy fruits, it is far more than just an edible plant.
Highlights of the winning plant:
- Immediate Harvest: The plants are delivered in such a way that ripe fruits (approx. 10 to 18 cm in size) are already present at the time of purchase.
- Versatility: Thanks to its compact growth height of about 50 cm, it is ideal for pots on the balcony, in greenhouses, or directly in the vegetable garden.
- Culinary Delight: The eggplants have an excellent texture and are perfect for grilling, frying, or oven dishes.
- Sustainable Cultivation: Vreugdenhil relies on biological plant protection measures and pollination by bumblebees.
Storytelling as the Key to Success
The Show Your Colours Award evaluates not only the visual quality of the plant but, above all, the story behind it – the storytelling. Vreugdenhil Young Plants successfully presented the themes of "Urban Gardening" and "Harvesting & Enjoying" in an attractive overall package consisting of the plant, the pot, and an informative label.
"The Pick-&-Joy Eggplant brings atmosphere to the kitchen and the terrace. It is the perfect response to consumer demand for healthy, homegrown food that simultaneously beautifies the surroundings," stated the organizers.
