A total of 54 new products from 31 exhibitors competed for the "IPM Novelty 2024" award, which was once again initiated by the German Horticultural Association (ZVG). Following the expert committee's assessment, seven new varieties were recognized and one new variety was awarded the jury's special prize.
In the "Bedding and Balcony Plants" category, Catharanthus roseus 'Soireee® White from the Dutch company MNP/Suntory was named "IPM Novelty 2024". The innovation of this Catharanthus is its very small flowers and compact, small growth habit. A great gift, because it is easy to care for, good for sunny locations and heat-tolerant with low water requirements, but also insensitive to prolonged rain. This flowering variety blooms continuously from March to November.
In the "Spring bloomers" category, the expert committee chose Pericallis cruentus Mandala® Plus Magic Purple from Dümmen Orange in Rheinberg. The special features of this variety are the fluorescent flower color and the energy-saving cultivation. It branches very well, even without inhibitors. The bright flower color is a great color introduction to the spring season, with a flowering period from March to the end of May. The dark foliage provides a great contrast to the flowers and completes the variety. It is well suited as a single plant but also great with several in a tub.
Zygopetalum 'Oxygen Optimistic' (AK8) from Alpha Orchids Breeding from de Lier in the Netherlands won in the "Flowering houseplants" category. An orchid with fragrant flowers and a high number of panicles, making it a plant with added value. It is very productive, grows compactly and has a very attractive flower coloration that contrasts interestingly with the leaf color. It is a great addition to the orchid range.
In the "Green houseplant" category, the Aloe vera Medivera from Amigo Plant in the Netherlands was awarded the title "IPM Novelty 2024". And another plant with added value. The Medivera impressed the jury with its compact, uniform growth. With its great leaf patterns and uniform leaf pattern, it looks very elegant. It is low-maintenance, can be used indoors and also outdoors if the temperatures are not too cool and also offers the possibility of treating small wounds with its leaf sap.
In the "Perennials" category, Helleborus hybrida Frostkiss Vibey Velvet from AllPlant in the Netherlands was awarded the title "IPM Novelty 2024". The radiant burgundy red makes it a treasure and is exemplary of the progress made in breeding. The interestingly veined foliage provides a great contrast to the flowers, which - not a matter of course for Helleborus - stand well above the foliage, making the plant an eye-catcher in the border all year round. The early flowering time makes it a 'found food' for nectar-seeking bees.
In the "Balcony fruit/vegetables" category, Eutrema japonicum 'Hana Utogi' from FitzGerald Nurseries Lt in Ireland won a special award. Wasabi for your own garden could become a hit with fans of Asian cuisine. The robust variety, with compact growth, a large number of edible flowers and sufficient rhizomes for harvesting wasabi. With a shady spot, preferably by a watercourse, but also suitable for vertical farming.
In the "Woody plants" category, the expert committee chose Pyracantha coccinea 'Orange Star' from Hoogeveen Plants in the Netherlands as the "IPM Novelty 2024". Pyracantha, firethorn, is experiencing a renaissance due to climate change and is THE evergreen shrub with the greatest drought resistance. 'Orange Star' is characterized by a large number of large, orange berries that remain on the plant for a long time. It is low-maintenance, a snack tree for birds and a real bee pasture in early summer during the flowering period and is not very susceptible to disease. It is versatile in use and suitable for both containers and beds.
This year, the jury awarded a special prize to the Mangave Mad about Mangav® 'Praying Hands' from Cactusmania di Manera Bruno in Ventimiglia, Italy. The jury sees it as a plant of the future that is an expression of innovative strength in the development of the ornamental plant range. This mangave is still a very young cross between Manfreda and Agave. It is climate-tolerant, has wonderful foliage with interesting markings and an unusual growth habit. A new form, chic, modern and easy to care for. It is the perfect addition to the exotic patio. Whether as a single plant or together with other succulents, it is a real eye-catcher.
In Hall 1a, all plants that have taken part in the "IPM Novelty 2024" competition will be exhibited in the "Novelty Showcase" of the German Horticultural Association (ZVG).
